Comments from Steve & Gill judd
We really don't think it's a platcheirus, due to the wing stigma, possible wing cloud and slightly swollen hind femur,
also the yellow marking is on the wrong tergite and the wrong shape for rosarum, of course we could very well be completely wrong.
What it is, though, no idea. Possibly a dark form of something with reduced yellow markings.
Might be interesting to see what Anne says as she is far too modest to admit it but she is really rather knowledgable on Hovers.

That’s funny. I tried to get a photo of one of these at Shotesham but it flew up and away!!
It’s in the Pipiza noctiluca group. From past FB posts I have sent and see , they can’t be taken to species from photos …..

Possibly Sphecodes ephippius?
Quite large, red extends to T4 and the spines on the legs are a translucent reddish colour.

The Sphecodes could be ephippius as seems to have short hairs on the front of T1 – not totally certain

The black wasp is a Crossocerus species of which there are quite a few.
Crossocerus has the ocelli in an equilateral triangle and one submarginal cell on the wings both shown clearly

Blood Bee Sp (Sphecodes Sp)
Possibly Sphecodes puncticeps
From previous photos Nick Owens commented
"I think it’s Sphecodes puncticeps. One of the photos shows a longitudinal groove on the front of the thorax and the head is broad.
It should have a single point on the mandible rather than a double one, but cannot see this in the photos. Often a heathland species.
The grove can just about be seen on this photo too.
